From the recording Wychwood
Bendigo Mitchell was a highwayman that terrorized travelers in Warwickshire.
His horse was named Skater after he escaped capture by riding over a frozen lake.
He was finally captured after being shot, was sentenced at Warwick and hanged for his crimes.
Interesting name though
Lyrics
And its Hi Ho Skater Away
I ride the Warwick Turnpike and the Old Foss way
You’d best hold up your hands, when I bid you to stand
And its Hey Ho Skater Away
Bendigo Mitchell is my name I ride for fortune and I ride for fame
I'd hold 'em up and dress them down a highway man was I
Stand and Deliver was my cry to rich and poor who passed on by
From Harwoods house to the cross on high on skater I would fly
And its Hi Ho Skater Away
I ride the Warwick Turnpike and the Old Foss way
You'd best hold up your hands when I bid you to stand
And its Hey Ho Skater Away
I tried the work I tried the Plough, but highwayman did suit some how
The Frech cocked hat and claret coat with lace all at my chin
Pistol and Rapier glisten and shine, boots and breeches of finest hide
Across the ice on Skater ride 'till a bullet broke my stride
And its Hi Ho Skater Away
I ride the Warwick Turnpike and the Old Foss way
You’d best hold up your hands when I bid you to stand
And its Hey Ho Skater Away
And now I lie, in a Warwick jail
My mercy pleas, to no avail
Before my peers, I have been tried
Now I’ve no-where left to hide
And so my dearest Polly to you I have been true
My heart has never faltered since the pledge I made to you
Won't you take my trusty Skater to the common and set him free
He's been a faithful servant and did all I asked of he
And its Hi Ho Skater Away
They'll be hanging me in Warwick at the break of day
And my body it will be found on Saltisford ground
And its Hi Ho Skater Away
They'll take me to the cross roads at the end of the day
And there into the ground they’ll put me six feet down
And cover me in cold cold clay
And its Hi Ho Skater Away
